The Bradbury Street/Gillett St area has become a key focus for the economic regeneration of Dalston town centre. The area currently includes a complex of 40 shops, workshops, and offices managed by Hackney Co-operative Developments. This now looks set to become the location of a new town square for local people, that includes the development of new buildings containing more low cost workspace, galleries, library and residential accommodation. The project has been selected by London's Mayor to be one of the first ten spaces in his 100 Spaces for London programme. Groundwork Hackney are providing major funding for the project through our Vital Centres and Green links programme.
Gillett Square Partnership minutes
Background
A Physical Regeneration Action Plan was commissioned by the borough in 2000 which introduced a proposal to create new mixed-use buildings around a public square, which would provide visual enclosure of the space, increased activity and greater public safety. These integrated improvements would be a catalyst to wider commercial regeneration involving Stamford Works on the north side of the square. The Council issued a draft position statement in November 2002.
Following the adoption by the Council of the action plan, considerable progress has been made towards creating a new cultural resource for Hackney residents:

Block model of Stamford Works development
· The Gillett Square Partnership has been established as a working group of key stakeholders to prepare proposals and take them forward to fruition.
The project has been selected by the Mayor of London to be part of his 100 Spaces for London programme which intends to create/improve 100 public spaces in London over the next five years.

new owners of Stamford Works have progressed plans for its redevelopment, making
provision for a future relationship of their building with the square. This
has now gained planning permission.
· An
outline design has been completed for the laying out of the square, and initial
proposals have been prepared for its future use and sustainable management. See

· A
study has been conducted to identify opportunities where arts and cultural
activities can establish a sense of place for the square as a cultural focus
in the regeneration of Dalston.

Discussions
are continuing between the members of the Gillett Street Partnership and Council
officers to prepare a fully comprehensive set of proposals for the development
of the new buildings and the laying out and management of the Square.
