St John’s churchyard is a local asset that encapsulates over eight centuries of history in the heart of Hackney. The grounds provide the setting for two important listed buildings, the Georgian church of St John at Hackney and St Augustine’s Tower.
The project has recently received confirmation of a major capital grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for conservation of the landscape. This is planned to start on site in approximately June 2005 for nine months. In addition Hackney Historic Buildings Trust have received an HLF grant for capital works to St Augustine's Tower to create better access, as well as an education and arts programme.
The final detailed proposals can be viewed by clicking the follwing link "detailed proposals". The management and maintenance plan is also available "see MMP"
The project was developed out of a consultation with key stakeholders and interested groups in 2001. Consultants were then appointed to undertake the preparation of a Restoration Management Plan and Business Plan which formed the basis of the original application. Groundwork East London have provided £xxx,000 of their own funds to support the delivery of the project.
An exhibition of the proposals was held at Sutton House in 2002. The original proposals are available on this website. See proposals .

Key objectives & priorities
The consultation revealed four key objectives for the regeneration of the churchyard.
These were to:
- develop a management structure for the regeneration and maintenance of the churchyard
- conserve the churchyard as a historical collection of quiet areas including open meadow, formal memorial garden, walled garden and play area
- make the churchyard safe for all
