Hackney Wick in East London is a 290 hectare (one square mile) area within the Valley of the River Lea. It is located just north of Stratford, a region which will form one of the main growth points in London, supported by developments such as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the already opened Jubilee Line. Hackney Wick is therefore strategically positioned to benefit from Stratford’s regeneration and enjoy improved economic and employment opportunities. Despite this, the historic industrial area around Hackney Wick station remains a poor quality environment in decline. Groundwork Hackney is managing the Boundary and Eyesore site element which is funded through SRB Hackney Wick. Further information is detailed below about the Hackney Wick programme as a whole and the key areas it will be focussing on this year. The programme is managed by Renaisi the borough's Regeneration Agency.
HACKNEY WICK SRB PROGRAMME
The Hackney Wick Programme is a seven year SRB Round Three Programme worth £70 million, which commenced in April 1997. Hackney Wick borders Stratford, a hub of regeneration activity and the planned site of an international rail link. The Wick is focusing on training, employment and business development.
The aim of the Hackney Wick SRB programme, as approved by Government Office for London in December 1996, is the transformation of Hackney Wick to place it on a sound footing for regeneration well into the 21st century, and to ensure that Hackney Wick contributes to and gains from the development of Stratford as a hub for international communications and a key centre for growth in the East London economy.
The SRB programme will achieve these aims through:-
- equipping people with the skills and training to succeed
- creating a successful and vibrant business sector
- establishing a confident and sustainable community
