Gillett Square July in 100 squares for London

PRESS RELEASE

12 July 2002

New Square Deal for Dalston

A tarmaced car park on Gillett St in Hackney, is one of 10 public-spaces identified for upgrading as part of a pilot-scheme to be launched by the Greater London Authority on 11 July. Groundwork Hackney suggested the site for the scheme, called 100 Spaces for London, which aims to create or upgrade 100 public-spaces in the capital over the next five years. A public square to be known as Gillett Square will be newly created out of the existing carpark, which is close to Dalston's busy Kingsland High Street. The proposals include workspace, a public library and residential accommodation as well as reduced town-centre car parking. The GLA's Architecture and Urbanism Unit (A+UU) will be championing the landscaping in the project and provide advice on design details. The A+UU's chief adviser is architect Richard Rogers, famous for landmarks such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Lloyds building in the City of London and who is also heading the design of City Academy, the site of the former Hackney Downs School.

The scheme has been prepared by "Hawkins Brown architects" on behalf of a partnership comprising private developers, London borough of Hackney, Groundwork Hackney and "Hackney Co-operative Developments" with funding from the "LDA" (London Development Agency).

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said

'Creating and managing high quality public-spaces is essential to delivering an urban renaissance in London… these first ten pilot-projects will show the way, but others will follow.'

Matthew Carrington, Project Development Manager at Groundwork Hackney said

'Having been on the partnership on this project for over three years, we are delighted that the Gillett Square Partnership is in reach of creating a high-quality public-space in Dalston. Our inclusion in the Mayor's programme will provide experiences which will enable other spaces in the borough to benefit in the future'

Site clearance is due to begin in the autumn.
